Program Description:
Does your UAB major or minor have an internship or practicum course?  Are you interested in enrolling in that UAB internship/practicum course, then completing all or part of the actual internship/practicum work while abroad?  This webpage is intended to guide UAB students through the process of obtaining official approval for their plans to take a UAB internship or practicum course abroad.

What is a UAB internship/practicum course?
These are UAB courses in which students do an internship or practicum, actually working in a company or organization related to the student's area of study, and earn UAB course credit.

How does a UAB internship/practicum course work?
The student enrolls in the UAB internship/practicum course via BlazerNET and is monitored by the UAB professor overseeing that course.  The student works for a supervisory person at a company or organization who directly supervises her or his work.  That supervisory person communicates the student's progress to the UAB professor who oversees the course.  At the end of the semester, the professor enters a grade for the UAB course into BlazerNET, based in part on reports from the supervisory person.

What are some examples of UAB internship/practicum courses?
A few examples are listed below.  Check the UAB course catalog to see if your department offers an internship/practicum course in your major or minor!
  • ITS 482. Internship in International Affairs.  Course description: Individually arranged assignments in international companies or organizations, monitored and evaluated by the director of international studies.
  • FLL 333. Foreign Language Internship.  Course description: Faculty-supervised opportunity for practical experience in tasks of international scope, may provide opportunities to use language(s) studied or applications of cultural knowledge.
  • SW 490. Practicum in Social Work.  Course description: Integration of social work knowledge and values with application of professional helping skills. Students participate in a full-time placement in approved social service agencies under supervision of master's-level social workers.
How does a UAB internship/practicum course abroad get planned?
These courses get planned by you (the student), the UAB professor overseeing the internship/practicum course, your internship/practicum supervisor, and UAB Education Abroad all working together.
  1. You (the student) find the internship/practicum location, company/organization, supervisor, and dates of travel.  Feel free to ask the UAB professor who oversees the UAB internship/practicum course for help because that professor may have contacts abroad.  You may also use an internship placement agency such as ISA Internships & Service Learning or the Intern Group.  You'll provide the details of your internship/practicum information to UAB Education Abroad by clicking the "Apply Now" button on this page.  You will also communicate that information to the UAB professor who will oversee your UAB internship/practicum course.
  2. UAB Education Abroad will coordinate the approval process for the abroad aspects of your UAB internship/practicum course.  UAB Education Abroad will also help you prepare to go abroad.
  3. You will coordinate with your UAB internship internship/practicum course professor and internship/practicum supervisor what work you will do at the internship/practicum site and how you will fulfill the requirements detailed in the UAB internship/practicum course syllabus.
How do I earn approval to take a UAB internship/practicum course abroad?
To get started, click the "Apply Now" button on this page and complete all submission requirements.  Note that in addition to completing those submission requirements, you'll need to enroll in the specific UAB internship/practicum course via BlazerNET.
